Dr. Peter Lockemann is Professor emeritus at the University of Karlsruhe. Until 2004 he held an appointment as a Professor in the Faculty of Informatics and the chair of Information Management Systems. Up to 2005 he was also a managing director of the Computer Science Research Center at Karlsruhe (FZI). He has held appointments at California Institute of Technology, Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, University of Florida and MIT, and was a regular visitor to the research institutions in Silicon Valley. He holds a doctorate in Electrical Engineering and a honorary doctorate in Economics from the University of Frankfurt. In 2005 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

Prof. Lockemann has close to 40 years of experience in database research. His recent interests centered around the area of distributed and collaborative data-intensive computer applications, with results applied in areas such as manufacturing, traffic management, electronic commerce, digital libraries, environmental information systems. He has received funding for numerous research projects from the German Research Council, the state of Baden-Württemberg, Federal ministries, the European Union and from industry.

He is the author of six textbooks and well over 150 research papers in journals, conference proceedings and books. An additional 450 papers have been published by his young researchers and Ph.D. students.

Prof. Lockemann is a member of ACM and Fellow of the German Computer Society. During his 15 years as a Trustee of VLDB Endowment, Inc., he was Secretary from 1989 and President from 1993-1997. From 1980-1990 he was the German representative on IFIP TC8 on Information Systems.

As a director of FZI, a highly successful institution for technology transfer,  he devoted his time to issues of technology transfer to medium-sized high-technology companies. He continues these activities as a director emeritus of FZI and as a consultant to Cyberforum, one of the largest IT networks in the region. His present activities include strengthening the regional networks for business software an their applications, and stimulating new projects for a "Smarter City of Karlsruhe". He is a member of several supervisory boards of young IT companies.
